Types of Bees in Texas

The Lone Star State is home to several types of bees. These include Africanized honeybees and American, carpenter, Southern Plains and two-spotted bumblebees. While American bees live throughout the state, others species are more prevalent in specific regions.

Bee Infestation Signs and Property Damage

All bees build their hives in dark sheltered environments, such as tree hollows, crawl spaces, attics, walls and beneath roof overhangs. Carpenter bees are wood-boring insects that create round holes in unpainted exterior surfaces like soffits and fascia boards. The surface beneath the hole is typically covered with yellow excrement that the bees push outside their hive. Another common sign of a bee infestation is the loud buzzing sound that occurs as the bees beat their wings at more than 11,000 strokes per minute. Their honey attracts other pests and encourages the growth of dangerous molds.

Safety Hazards

All bees are territorial, but some species like Africanized bees are particularly aggressive. The insects swarm and attack when they think that their space is being invaded. Some bees chase their victims up to a quarter of a mile. Bee stings are a common reason for emergency room visits. The venom can cause an anaphylactic reaction and kill a person without a previous history of an allergy.

Hive Removal

Africanized honeybees, carpenter bees and any unwanted bee colony on your property pose serious hazards. To prevent property damage and injuries or fatalities, it is important to remove unwanted beehives. Applying a household pesticide near the opening of the hive is ineffective and dangerous because the colony is typically located several feet inside your home. Professional exterminators have the experience and tools required to eradicate the nest. Their knowledge enables them to use effective pest control measures. If you have a bee infestation, contact a professional pest control company.
